UPS selection starts with measuring the actual power draw of every device to be protected — not the nameplate maximums, which are typically 50–60% higher than real-world loads. We use a power meter to measure real load, then select a UPS with sufficient VA capacity at 70–75% of maximum rating (the efficiency sweet spot for APC Smart-UPS). Over-sized UPS running at low load has poor efficiency and accelerated battery degradation. Under-sized UPS triggers overload faults. Runtime depends on the UPS capacity, the connected load, and the battery count.
